World’s First Hydrogen Plug-in Vehicle Will Be Ready Next Year

Finally, the rumors on the Mercedes-Benz GLC proved to be true when the automaker showcased the Mercedes-Benz GLC F-Cell in early June of 2016. The latest Mercedes-Benz GLC F-Cell has the plug-in battery technology which goes into production next year, and it will be the first plug-in, hydrogen powered vehicle, as Benz says.

The biggest advantage with this is that the 9-kWh lithium-ion battery can be charged using a plug. The GLC F-Cell can run for a range of 31 miles on the power of the battery. With this advancement, the users of the GLC F-Cell will be able to run for long periods of time being independent on the hydrogen equation of the vehicle. Since the network of hydrogen fueling stations is increasing, this aspect in the GLC F-Cell is prominent.

All the drive unit’s components fit into the engine bay as the GLC’s fuel-cell system is 30 percent smaller with 90 percent less platinum. By using this technology, the cost of the GLC fuel-cell has been decreased significantly.  The struggle made by the Mercedes has been successful, resulting in many advantages for the GLC F-Cell.

According to Mercedes-Benz, about 8.8 pounds of hydrogen is stored in two carbon fiber tanks that sit on the vehicle’s floor (one beneath the rear seats and another in the center). The battery, electric motor, and charging unit are all packaged at the rear of the GLC.  The battery and the fuel cell units can provide almost 311 miles of range. The hydrogen tanks can be refilled in 3 minutes.  During the Paris Motor Show in September 2016, more information on this first ever plug-in hydrogen vehicle might be known.
