Renewable energy is properly in season at the time. There are many ideas that are considered to be solutions. A significant amount of the ideas has already been put into action. Some of these in smaller amounts than others. This is the best way to analyze and troubleshoot any new methods of gaining things like electricity for homes, and electric cars for cleaner transportation. The problem that has ensued, however, is the lack of consideration given to the details at the very far ends of these energy sources.
It is important to understand that every item we use as humans have somehow been produced by some process. If it doesn’t come from nature, the item in question had been manmade somehow. The piece of paper you write on, and even the pen you use, has been assembled in a factory. Even if an item contains natural elements from the earth, it has caused disruption. The mere gathering of materials, such as mining methods, leaves unsettling marks on the earth.
Electric cars are one of the biggest hopes for a clean air initiative. These, however, will be causing many new problems. While we may benefit from cleaner air, we will then be dependent on the mining of lithium for the batteries these cars need. Billions of people driving electric cars will eventually deplete a supply faster than the earth can replenish it. The mining process also leaves behind damaging pollutants. Water and earth alike will suffer in new ways. It is pertinent that we more thoroughly on how “green” some of the solutions really are. The Wind and solar power revolve around the use of materials that must be manufactured, while dams for hydropower infringe on the natural stability and rhythms of wildlife and land.
The only true way to slow down the damage we are doing to the environment is to take a considerable step back in time to when some of our modern day conveniences were not available. Products we do use, like electronics, should be made to last longer, so we do not have to replace these non-renewable items so frequently. There will have to be a collective decision from all humanity to limit the time we spend in personal cars, even opting out of owning one altogether. Some countries have made great strides in the improvement of public transportation, while others have built communities that have accessible necessities by foot or bike. These communities are also extremely beneficial to the mental health of individuals. The improved social interaction in a closer knit community can be a relief from the hectic rush of modern day living. The changes made to improve the environment must be substantial and all-encompassing, or we will never completely find a way to heal the planet we live on.
