Moss is now being used to generate electricity. Elena Mitrofanova has produced a living wall that provides clean energy. “Moss Voltaics” use live plants and combine them with architectural elements and this is the basis of the thesis that Mitrofanova is putting forward as part of her studies at the Institute for Advanced Architecture in Catalonia.
This is not just a small project as there are hopes that in time, this will be used on an urban scale. It is no longer just about running the one home via an attractive form of renewable energy. It is not only “moss” that can be used, but this is the subject chosen for the initial research. It is, however, the certain substance as it is so abundantly available in places throughout the city and is easy to collect. Algae could be used as a replacement, but the production system is working very well with moss.

It is through simple photosynthesis that the energy is generated. The system is designed in such a way that it can be used on a large or small scale, and this would be decided when it was known how much energy was needed. Mitrofanva has calculated the amount of moss voltaics that would require for certain items to be powered, and she has already laid out graphics detailing what is needed. She has done this for things such as a basic light bulb and up to a Seqway.
