China, who is accepted to be the world’s top producer of coal, will close 1,000 coal mines to in an attempt to limit air pollution and greenhouse gas emission. China’s National Energy Administration confirmed the announcement of the State Council this month. It will hasten the countries desire to stop relying so much on coal.
For the first time, a Chinese company has ranked top as the producer of wind energy and already companies are showing the way when it comes to solar power generation. The move away from coal is largely an attempt to deal with the smog many cities suffer from.

Less coal is needed as the economy is slowing and changing. There are not going to be any new coal power plants approved, and this is likely to see the cost of coal rising as there will no longer be so much produced.
It is estimated that there will be 500 million metric tonnes of coal available in the next 3-5 years as mines are closed. The same amount will go as a result of producers consolidating. Reuters believe that in all more than 10,000 mines will be closed and this will please Chines officials as there will be fewer issues with smog.
