The winner of the most plug-in car sales champion is neither Tesla nor Nissan. It is a company called BYD, from China. Five years ago Nissan and Chevy came up with their plug-in vehicles. And until this year, Nissan’s car Leaf sold 200,000 that make the car most popular electric car in the world.
How about others? How many did they sell? Ok, first the familiar brands that we all know. BMW sold around 30,000 of its i3 and i8. Ford sold around 19,000 of its hybrid Fusion and C-Max Energy, and Focus Electric models in the U.S., if we add the sales in Canada, the company sold something like 20,000. General Motors sold 15,393 Volt and 2,629 Sparks EVs in the U.S. and with the sales in South Korea and Canada this number can say 20,000 sold globally.

One of the best seller Nissan sold about 50,000. And everyone’s favorite, our dream car Tesla Sold 50,557 cars in 2015. But none of them is the winner. The most sale belongs to the BYD, which starts the first production of plug-in vehicles in 2008. Their total sale number is 61,722. In 2015, the company delivered 31,898 Qins and 18,375 Tangs, along with 7,029 of the older e6, T3 small commercial van and e5 battery-electric compact sedan, along with 2,888 Denza compact hatchbacks built by Daimler.
No wonder, why the Tesla and other car manufacturers want to get into the Chinese market. But BYD’s sale number can be passed by Tesla or GM. Tesla will show-up its Model X in March and GM will start to produce Bolt end of 2016. And the both car will be sold around $30,000 in the U.S. The vehicles prices are perfect for the United States market and following the year 2017 both Tesla and GM might pass the number of BYD sales if there is no other come up with a good car with this price range.
