Although technology in general advances at a phenomenal rate, one particular item that seems to have advanced quicker than most over the past few years is 3D printers. Not only are they useful, but they’re great fun too and nearly everywhere you look these days, whether it’s commercial or personal, you can see the footprint of a 3D printer.
One particular 3D printer that’s causing a scene right now is Robo R2. This product took over two years finalize, but as most people that have experienced it, they will agree it was well worth the wait. According to the company, around 5,000 hours were put into developing the Robo R2 between just four individuals.
There are a total of 417 components to this 3D printer including all its wires, screws, plastic components, nuts, motors, rods, and electronics, and each piece was individually drafted carefully in CAD before being passed over to the manufacturer to their job. For all the 417 parts, the company uses 20 different manufacturers in which to get them.
The company use over 44 injection molds for making Robo R2’s many components and they went through 19 different designs over a two-year period before they finally got the result they were looking for. Once the design direction had been decoded the team went on to make a total of seven different prototypes before the final product was ready. So, as you can see, it’s quite a complex design and one that’s had a lot of time and effort put into to it to make it what it is today.
