Elon Musk Wants to Disconnect Superchargers From the Grid and Go Solar

We all know that Tesla cars are lean, green, electric machines. But, what many of you may not have known is that CEO Elon Musk has just announced that he wants to run Tesla’s Supercharger network completely on solar power or batteries. For those of you that didn’t know, Tesla’s Supercharger network gives Tesla cars the power they need and by doing this they’ll all be able to operate completely separate from the electric grid.

“All Superchargers are being converted to solar/battery power. Over time, almost all will disconnect from the electricity grid,” stated Musk in a recent Twitter response. The user in question stated that he could “stand at the Tesla superchargers and see the coal power plant.” He also added, “Play the shell game all you want these are coal powered.”  Although Tesla has achieved far more surprising results, the guy does have a point as some of the larger Superchargers would need solar fields the size of a football field to make work, and for the moment, that’s just not doable.

Currently, the United States’ electricity is made up mostly from non-renewable sources such as natural gas.  But Tesla is well aware of that fact and is already on track to double the number of Superchargers it has by the end of 2017. Changing to electric powered cars are a fantastic way to help the environment and as pointed out recently by Electrek, the average electric car in the U.S. is about efficient as a 73 mph gas-powered vehicle would be. So, electric cars do, by far, outweigh gas powered vehicles when it comes to eco-friendliness.
