Are Electric Vehicles Too Quiet?

Electric vehicles are great for the environment, and great for your wallet too interns of running costs, but the one thing that lets them down slightly is the noise – or lack of it should I say. Not only does the quietness deter all those die hard gasoline fans who love nothing more than the roar of an engine, but isn’t it a little dangerous to not being able to hear an oncoming car until it’s pretty much on top of you?

A similar situation to this just happened in Auckland, New Zealand recently where a resident was almost mowed down by an electric train because they simply didn’t hear it coming. But, at the same time, we still all need to apply a little common sense when out and about. Local rail services manager, Craig Inger, advised, “It’s really important that you check both directions before crossing, a train can come from either direction. The lights and bells mean don’t cross!”

So, yes, electric vehicles are fabulous at what they do, but perhaps auto manufacturers in New Zealand need to think about making them a little noisier, just to safeguard the rest of us against people if nothing else. By the end of 2019, it will be mandated by the US Department of Transportation that all electric and hybrid cars in the US will have to make engine noise of some kind. Maybe New Zealand needs to follow suit.
