Tesla’s Autopilot 2.0 is now out and gives users even better-steering performance by adding an additional front facing the camera to it. Up until now, Tesla has only been using 1 out of 8 cameras, but following the 8.1 update, two cameras are now fully functional within the sensor suite.
The Tesla Autopilot is in the process of being completely rebuilt, and this is a significant leap forward for the company. The previous Autopilot system worked using just one single camera to a whole suite encompassing eight cameras (3 front-facing and five at various points around the car), as well as Tesla’s very own image processing technology running in a Nvidia supercomputer.
One of the main things that were improved as part of the latest upgrade is the increased speed of Auto Steer to a maximum of 80 mph making it much easier to use on highways. So it seems like performance is now beginning to get on par with the first generation Autopilot, but there’s still a way to go yet before it’s truly comparable. For starters, the new Autopilot function doesn’t yet have its automatic wiper or headlight enabled as of yet. But it’s coming; Tesla just wants it to ensure the safety side of things is taken for of first before they move on to the aesthetics and little extras it has to offer.
The company’s priority now is to implement the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system into the vehicles which has been reported to reduce the risk of a collision by nearly 40% compared to that of the first generation models. Once all the outstanding safety issues have been addressed Tesla will begin to focus on the Autopilot’s enhanced features, such as Autosteer+ and Smart Summon.
