The rise in artificial intelligence is here and has brought with it many advantages. However, there are also disadvantages that come with it. One of those is in people that are finding it difficult to hang on to their current roles and are being pushed out by more effective machines. The threat that automation will steal jobs is a worldwide issue that’s affecting millions of people already, and it’s not over yet.
According to the results of a recent study carried out by Accenture, more than 1,000 large companies worldwide that are already using or in the process of testing AI and machine learning systems were, in fact, creating entirely new, unique categories of jobs for humans. Three distinct categories of jobs kept emerging repeatedly and they were trainers, explainers, and sustainers. Those who find themselves in these roles will be run alongside AI and complement it while ensuring it’s being both effective and responsible.
The first wave of these jobs to emerging will need to human workers to teach and oversee AI to ensure they’re working effectively. Take customer service chatbots for example; these need to be trained to detect all the little subtleties and complexities of human communication. One company working on this at the moment is Yahoo Inc. Teams there are busy trying to teach its language processing system how not to take things human say, literally. So far it can detect sarcasm with an 80% accuracy on social media sites and other websites.
Soon, there will also be rules requiring individuals to teach AI the art of compassion. Already digital assistants such as Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa are making use of a machine-learning system created by New York-based startup Kenoko Inc helping the AI show sympathy and depth.
