Would a Black Hole Annihilate Us If It Suddenly Appeared in Our Solar System?

If you asked this same question to both a movie director and an astronomer, do you think you would get the same answer? Probably; but then that’s because at the end of the day if it were to happen it would be a pretty catastrophic event. Well, a movie is soon to be made about a black hole entering our solar system and some of the things we will see are cities being struck by massive meteorites, continents devoured by super-volcanoes, and a second Ice Age triggered by the Earth’s shifting axis. But would all of these things happen if a black hole were to suddenly appear?

Nick Stone, an astrophysics researcher at Columbia University commented when asked, “I would say that two out of the three of the disasters in [that] quote are actually plausible, provided we accept the premise of a stray black hole passing through our solar system.”  He also explained that chances are that the movie would feature a stellar mass black hole opposed to a supermassive one that just be so big it would kill everything in sight (not much a movie there). Stone also argued that if the black hole were to pass a long way away and asteroids were to strike it would probably take centuries for them to hit us.  However, a little closer and we would feel the brunt within a year and we would experience a new “cycle of seasons”.

Stone explained the worst case scenario if the black hole was really close to our planet, “If the black hole passes extremely close to the Earth, its tidal forces could crack the Earth’s crust, creating the supervolcanoes mentioned in the press release.  However, if the black hole comes that close, it is quite likely Earth would be rejected from the solar system, causing even bigger problems as the planet freezes.” Although there is no set date for the release of the movie as of yet, it sounds like it could be worth watching, so keep your eyes and ears peeled and maybe we’ll get some tips for the future (just in case).
