China has made some pretty significant commitments when it comes to renewable energy production, but so far, are doing well and are emerging as one of the global leaders in this sector. The two biggest targets the Chinese have regarding renewable energy utilization comes from the Copenhagen pledge and the Paris commitment; the first which involved reaching a 15 percent level in using non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption and the second to raise that level to 20 percent by 2030.
To achieve these targets set, China will need to produce around 1.9 trillion kilowatt hours of electricity via renewable energy. And although this may seem like a ridiculously high number, they are on track to do it. China has achieved success so far in various areas when it comes to producing clean energy and the renewable energy sector in China is growing much faster than fossil fuels or nuclear power. To keep at it and ensure they maintain these levels, China will increase efforts not just in solar, but in the wind, geothermal, and biomass energy options too.
While they are certainly on track, China still has a way to g before they can completely phase out traditional coal power facilities. Currently, targets are being met, but at only just, over 20% there is little room for movement. China needs to keep going in the renewable energy efforts to ensure they can hit their goals set out before them over the next 14 years and hopefully spur on others to take action.
