Techies Are Responsible for Breakthroughs in Cancer Treatments

You may not realize it at first, but if you think about it, it’s really down to the techie geeks that all these revolutionary cancer treatments are discovered and put to good use. Take the Human Genome Project for example which would not have been made possible without the help of some pretty skillful techies. It’s a fantastic tool for allowing human DNA exploration to be conducted and new therapies created as a result.


The Human Genome Project sparked advancement in the world of cancer treatments as it allowed genome sequencing to be done fast and inexpensively. It also allows health professionals to administer more personalized treatments to patients, therefore, increasing their chance of recovery.  With more than fourteen million people being diagnosed with cancer each year it’s imperative that a cure or at least better treatments are found.

Precision medicine is another reason that techies can take credit for, in taking the hard work out of deciding the best course of treatment for the patient. An early diagnosis is fantastic, but it’s getting the treatment right the first time that’s really important here.  With the use of genomics, health professionals can see what treatments will be best and what to expect regarding recovery times. The more data that is collected from each patient, the more accurate treatment can be given to the next.

Ronen Solomon is Head of R & D for Philips’ Genomics Oncology Venture, and he has dedicated many hours to developing specialized treatments, and he believes that with the right technologies to gather and decipher all the biomedical data the discovery of new drugs could become a much faster process.  Ronen and team are one of the first groups in the world to get a bird’s eye view of the curation process.


One of the things that spurred Ronen on to do such marvelous research is that his own mother was diagnosed while he was an engineering student. So, he then decided to take the best of both industries (engineering and health sciences) and combine them in a way that he could contribute to the acceleration of genomics oncology informatics as a way of honoring his own mother.

The evolution of genomic medicine is a fantastic contribution to the world of healthcare and will soon evolve to become a cornerstone in the developing of cures for various diseases.  As genomics is used more, we will see treatments becoming more personalized based on the person’s needs and ultimately hope to see patient survival rates increasing.
