According to researchers in New Zealand, when a child goes through a brain test at a tender age, it can be foretold whether he will succeed. If such a child scores low on the test, it is a sign that his brain is poorly developed and is more likely to be a danger to society. Some researchers from Duke University studied the lives of over a thousand children and proved it to be true. They noted how crucial the early experiences are for setting the tone for later years in life. Although this study focused more on disadvantaged kids (poor or with slow brain development), it was realized when another study was taken that children of the middle class had similar results.
Modifiable
The researchers did go on to point out that with adequate support, the children’s results could be changed. A professor at Duke University, Terrie Moffitt, stated to BBC News that the earlier this help is given, the better as it could get worse and worse if things are begun incorrectly. Prof Moffitt was also in agreement with the findings. She also added that society should stop the way they view and look down on the “losers” and “dropouts” and help them do better.
Her husband Prof Avshalom who did the study with her stated that he wished that the government would also pay attention to the needs of such children early in life.
Nursery education
Although consecutive governments in the UK have worked to build up nursery education, they did not fully realize its importance. The issue now is to improve the quality of nursery education especially toward the areas that are at a disadvantage. The Dunedin longitudinal study, which studied the lives of 1,037 people born between April 1972 and March 1973 for 40 years, showed that the disadvantaged people took up only 20% of the populace but made use of 80% of public services in Dunedin, New Zealand.
