More Gigafactories to open in U.S., Musk Announces

While speaking at the National Governors Association, where politicians are on the lookout for business opportunities for their cities, districts, or states, Elon Musk announced that he wants to open at least two or three more Gigafactories in the United States.

It is well known that Musk’s goal is to open Gigafactories, the factories that produce the lithium batteries, Powerwalls, and Powerpacks that fuel Tesla cars and homes, around the world but this is the first time we’ve been reassured that several of the solar-powered factories will be opened stateside. The Gigafactory 1, being built in Nevada, is still under construction but is expected to be in full production by 2018. It is expected to generate $100 billion of an economic boom for the neighboring areas in the next 20 years.

Although he was vague on the timeline, only specifying construction in the “next few years”, Musk firmly believes that a significant number of new cars purchased in the next decade will be electric powered vehicles. More than that he expects EVs to be the main automobiles on the road within 20 years. The factories are being planned to meet this expected expansion in demand for the Tesla batteries.

Musk also touched on other relevant topics, including evolving regulations for driverless cars and the importance of encryption and other hacker-proof security features for such cars. Some features include a possible kill switch and proprietary encryption on key systems like the brakes and powertrains.
