Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is soon and Apple fans are expecting news regarding updates to not only most of their product lines, including iPhone, macOS, Apple Watch, and Apple TV, but also their future products in the latest tech areas like health, AR, and their standalone digital assistant to compete against Amazon’s Alexis.
However, the yearly annual conference appears to have some surprises for followers. Excitement is growing for Apple’s latest changes to their MacBook Pro, MacBook, and MacBook Air products and some users will be unsettled.
Last week, Forbes reported that the MacBooks could be in line for an upgrade:
“The updates are expected to be based on Intel’s seventh generation chip design. The Kaby Lake processor already features heavily in the high-end laptops that are running Windows 10 and is set to dominate the professional laptop space this year.”
Yet there may be drawbacks in it for Apple. Reports have MacBook sales up fifteen percent last quarter following their previous new hardware debut in October 2016. If the product line is refreshed then customers who bought in October may feel betrayed by the company. An updated laptop with Kaby Lake architecture will be more powerful while at the same time lowering the retail and resale price of the late 2016 model. On the other hand, what choice did they have?
Last year the Kaby Lake processors weren’t ready in time for their annual releases but were available for the Windows 10 release in early 2017. If they wait until their usual October release date for their comparatively powered computers then Windows gets the upper-hand in the market, leaving Apple to choose between profit margins and customer loyalty.
For now, it appears Apple has chosen the former and will be selling their new tech as practically possible. It’s not unusual for technology to advance faster than consumers may like, yet it’s something we’ve gotten used to over time. Now it looks like Apple will find out if this relatively short time between releases is too bitter a pill for their consumers to swallow.
