Brain surgery isn’t easy at the best of times, but it may be about to get easier with thanks to this ingenious robot. This new piece of technology can cut down the time it takes to get into a skull from two hours to less than three minutes. Intricacy is key when it comes to brain surgery as just one slip could prove fatal for the patient. Researchers from the University of Utah are currently in the process of developing the amazing robot and so far have managed to reduce the time it takes to complete a complex procedure by as much as 50 times. The team working on the robot published their findings in the journal Neurosurgical Focus.
The programmer uses data gleaned from CT scans to guide it around the vulnerable areas of the skull. “We can program [it] to drill the bone out safely just by using the patient’s CR criteria,” said lead neurosurgeon William Couldwell. “It basically machines out the bone.” Moving forward, if this type of machine were to become mainstream, not only would it save lives, but it would also save money in the long run too. The money would be saved on surgeons salaries, and used in places of more importance. And, shorter surgery times would not only be more cost effective but would also mean less time the patient has to be anesthetized, which on its own can cause complications. Medical professionals everywhere are welcoming the onslaught of robots in the operating theater and are pleased with the results achieved so far. Now, we just need to see more of them.
