Are You Ready to Wire Your Brain to the Internet?

Elon Musk is well known for having some good, innovative ideas and is constantly using new technologies to enhance his companies.  Now, one of his newest ventures, Neuralink, wants to wire your brain to the internet in an attempt to evolve human civilization that little bit more. The company is looking to develop a “whole brain interface” that will essentially link your brain wirelessly to the rest of the world.

Not everyone is with Musk on this one as is a little far fetched and too invasive for some to accept. At the moment, there are no other major competitors with this idea, so Musk definitely has the advantage there. But why are there not many people doing it I wonder?  Who would be connected to and would we lose control?  There are many questions that need to answer and many hurdles that Neuralink will need to overcome before it reaches its ultimate goal.

A whole-brain interface would allow the user to connect and communicate wirelessly through the cloud with computers and other Neuralink users. But, as neat as that sounds, there are still serious issues to address. Firstly, this isn’t like any medical implant out there. It is an elective surgery that would be available for healthy people for non-medical reasons. But, where does that put the company in terms of the law and ethics, and is really even possible?

So far only one known scientist has used himself as a research subject and that hasn’t gone particularly well. He has since suffered life-threatening complications. Another problem with Neuralink lies in the control of it.  How we can we ensure that people aren’t going to be monitoring us unnecessarily. And what about hackers?  How would we protect ourselves against them? As with anything that’s connected to the internet, including all your smart devices, there is a good chance your security will be compromised at one point or another.  It’s far too soon to tell whether Neuralink will become a huge success or not, but if anyone can make a go of it, Musk is probably the best man for the job.
