Forgetting People’s Names Isn’t Necessarily Your Fault

There’s now scientific evidence that suggests those who have trouble remembering people’s names may not be at fault. The brain is a fantastic tool when it works how we want it to. But, because it has to process so much information continually, sometimes things get misconstrued or forgotten altogether. Much of this is due to the fact that brain has a great filtering system in that if it doesn’t feel something is worth remembering, then it won’t.

Our brain processes memories into two different categories in the brain – long-term and short-term memories. When it comes to remembering names, it’s our short term memory that deals with this, hence if you don’t use it often, there is a high chance it will be forgotten as some more relevant information is taken in. The logic behind it is that there is very little to associate with just a name, whereas if someone was to tell you their occupation, you automatically form that image, where it’s far more likely to stay remembered.

So, although it sounds very doom and gloom and that you now have to photograph and catalog everyone that you meet, but there are things you can do to help with this little problem. Keep reading for some very important name remembering hints:

1.  Build associations. Your brain is one big catalog, so the more associations you can link together the better chance you have of remembering them.

2.  Pay attention. If you weren’t listening, then you have no chance, so stay awake!

3.  Spell it out.  When you meet someone new, ask them to spell their name out loud.  You could then imagine the letters as they are saying it.

4.  Help people with your name.  Come up with a catchy way to introduce yourself and make it easy for others to remember your name. For example, “I’m Kelly, and I like Jelly!”

5.  Keep using the new person’s name.  Create muscle memory be repeatedly saying the new name. It is more likely to stick if you do.

6.  Use word play. Pair up names with rhyming words to help remember.  For example, Jane is insane!
