A recent survey was carried out by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to see if the general public as a whole knew what foods were good for them and which ones they should be avoiding. The FDA also surveyed several members of the American Society for Nutrition about the nutritional value of 52 different foods. The results of the survey were quite surprising in that many of us are led to believe certain foods are healthy for us, when in fact, it’s quite the opposite.
The survey revealed that a number of foods including orange juice, American cheese, frozen yogurt, coconut oil, and even SlimFast shakes were voted much healthier by the general public than that of nutritionists. One of the biggest divides in food came from granola. Where over 70 percent of the public deemed granola to be healthy, only 28 percent of nutritionists agreed. On the flip side, foods that the experts considered being healthier than the general public included things like shrimp, hummus, tofu, wine, sushi, and quinoa. However, this may be because these foods are still relatively new as part of the mainstream diet and people are unaware of their nutritional values.
Often the media is to blame for putting out mixed messages about what is and what isn’t good for us, but there were still certain areas that both the public and experts did agree on. Pretty much everyone agreed that healthy foods included chicken, apples, oranges, and oatmeal and the not so healthy ones included cookies, white bread, bacon, and soda.
