One Swiss pilot, Raphel Domjan, is literally planning to go to the edge of space to prove just how good renewables are. If all goes well, this will be the highest that any plane has ever gone and will help to state his case that renewable energy is not just equal to, but far superior to fossil fuels. And, the plane that is looking to make headlines is called SolarStratos.
Domjan’s mission will involve flying up to the edge of space (approximately 25,000 meters up), staying there for 15 minutes, and then descending back down to Earth. In an interview, he stated, “Our goal is to be the highest plane ever, not only solar and electric.” They are also looking to show the world that solar technology will take humans places that petroleum never could.
But to carry on with the project, Domjan needs to raise more funding as it’s an expensive feat trying to reach the edge of space. He’s already raised $5 million in order to design and manufacture the plane, though, so what’s a few more, eh? The finished product should weigh in at around 1,000 pounds, and that includes the two 19kw motors. But, this is slightly too much to be able to reach the edge of space successfully, so some modifications will need to be made before launch date.
Another issue that needs to be ironed out is how Domjan will breathe once at 25,000 meters. At this altitude, there is only two percent of the oxygen level that we are used to. Estimates suggest that to make the mission a complete success then around another $5 million is needed. So, only time will tell if Domjan and his team will make it as it’s a great project, so fingers crossed all will go well.
