They may not have been so quick off the mark as other car manufacturers run the race, but Maserati has now announced their plans to join the electric vehicle race by 2020. It may be a little late, but better late than never, eh?
An Italian car manufacturer that is part of the Fiat-Chrysler group, Maserati is a luxury brand that caters to a certain type of clientele (typically one that has a lot of money). They have made a fine name for themselves over the past century and will continue to do so with the introduction of their first-ever electric car. Hey, if Tesla, Mercedes, and many others can do it then why not Maserati?
It will be the Fiat Chrysler’s second electric car apart from the Fiat 500e which has very limited availability. The company’s engineering head, Roberto Fedeli, confirmed that Maserati will be looking to introduce an entirely electric car rather than a hybrid and said, “I think we could show something before 2020. Maybe 2019”. Maserati has already confirmed that they should at least have a prototype to show off within the next two years. But, it may not be what everyone is expecting a may take an entirely different style to that of a traditional Maserati.
Rumours have it the new electric vehicle would be a low-volume grand tourer type model, which could be hard for them to pull off, being so different to what they are used to. But, in order to stay in the game and compete with others, they will have to find that blend between what’s new and what their customers have grown to love and cherish and hope they get it right!
