They may not be the first car manufacturer that springs to mind when thinking about electric vehicles, but Mercedes are quickly coming up the ranks, ready to give Tesla a run for its money. While EV’s are becoming increasingly popular and battery capabilities getting much more efficient, it seems silly for any auto manufacturer not to join the race. Also, with less parts to worry about EV’s are cheaper to produce and maintain, and are better for the environment than traditional vehicles, so is a win-win situation for everyone.
The man who is in charge of the electric integration at Mercedes is Jurgen Schenk, and he says that energy density of batteries improves by as much as 14 percent annually, and no doubt Mercedes will use this as part of their strategy. Eventually, they are hoping to achieve 300kW or more charging rate, which would be almost as quick as filling up a conventional car with fuel.
But, Mercedes are not the only ones in the race, and if they do want to win, they need to stay one step ahead. Currently, Daimler, BMW, and Audi are all investing heavily in EV’s, and AMG has just announced that it will be launching 48 different models in the next few years that will be zero emissions. So, only time will tell as to who will take the lead in this market and who will be left trailing behind.
