Recycling plastic is and always has been a pain in the backside. It’s expensive, it’s messy, it can be toxic to wildlife, and in most cases, there are alternatives that can be used. Two companies that are hot on this topic and understand the importance of banning plastics as we know them are Monosol and WikiCell Designs. Both of these U.S. companies are in the market of producing edible food packaging.
Monosol will start to sell its edible food pouches this year which will include dissolvable oatmeal pouches, a drink stick, and a cocoa mix that you stir into hot water until everything, including the packaging, dissolves. No mess, no fuss! While the pouches are designed to replace any packaging that touches the food, there is still outer packaging needed to protect the food from getting contaminated on the supermarket shelf.
WikiCell Designs also work on the same principle as Monosol, but both the inner and outer packages are edible with their products. WikiCells are ultra-thin membranes that surround foods, shielding them from oxygen and moisture and to help preserve them. They are also washable so can be used safely as outer packaging.
Another innovative company trying to reduce the amount of food and packaging waste across the U.S. is in.Gredients, which is a zero-packaging store, located in Austin, Texas. There advertisement to draw in customers is, “Bring in your containers, weigh and label them, fill them, and pay at the counter.” By people buying only what they need to and not worrying about fancy packaging, loads can cut food and packaging waste. So, we why not check out some of the theses great companies, now?
