Global Warming is Making Our Oceans Sicker and Sicker

We all know that global warming causes devastating effects on the environment, but one area that is often overlooked is the world’s oceans. As the temperatures are becoming warmer and warmer, a disease is spreading around our oceans at an alarming rate and making them sicker and sicker. Recent studies have just been carried out across 12 different countries to see just how damaged our ecosystems are, and their results were quite terrifying.

The results of the study suggest that the world’s oceans have absorbed as much as 93 percent of the warming effects of climate change.  Because the planet is made up of mostly water, at the sun’s rays hits the oceans the heat is quickly dissipated. The report states, “By absorbing a disproportionate amount of heat from global warming, and by taking up the rapidly increasing emissions of carbon dioxide, the ocean has shielded the world from even more rapid changes in climate.”

Because of the rapid rise in temperatures within the oceans, creatures such as jellyfish and seabirds are being forced to find waters that are cooler.  There has also been an increase in the number of microbes and harmful bacteria found in the waters as the warmer temperatures are perfect breeding grounds for them.  If the waters become too poisonous, this will be passed down the food chain, and we as humans will soon find ourselves being left with only contaminated water supplies.

By the time 2050 comes, most of the world’s coral supply will be damaged by bleaching and harvests from marine fisheries are expected to fall from between 10 to 30 percent if things carry on the way they are now.  Arctic environments will also suffer badly, and some will disappear completely, taking with them the entire polar bear species.  The researchers from the study are hoping that the investigation will prompt industries to make the switch to using renewable energy sources to try and save the world’s oceans, landscapes, wildlife, and humans.
