Volvo Is Quietly Becoming One Of The Top Tech Leaders of The Automotive Industry

Tesla could soon have some stern competition in the name of Swedish auto manufacturers, Volvo. Often known as being one of the tech safety leaders of the automotive market, Volvo is quickly come up in ranks in other areas.  As they look to introduce gadgets in their cars that go beyond the realms of safety and will take on even the likes of Tesla.

Volvo has just signed a $300 million partnership deal with Uber, the transportation network giants, to begin developing a new base vehicle for autonomous driving that will be used by both companies.  Tesla may soon find themselves knocked off the number 1 spot when it comes to autonomous driving.  As early as next year, Volvo is looking to launch its Pilot Assist II which will take control of all steering and brake up to speeds of 80mph.

The system currently used by Volvo is only semi-autonomous and only handles the steering and braking when doing speeds of up to 30mph on the highway.  It also must have a car in front of it to be able to work.  However, next year’s system is the one that Tesla should be aware of as will be a much closer comparison to what they offer.  It will no longer need to follow a car and will handle speeds of up to 80mph while applying autonomous driving.  Volvo will introduce the technology as a standard feature of the S90 and be available as an optional extra in the XC90.
