Electric charging stations are set to come in waves across the U.K. and estimate suggest that as soon as 2020 there could be more of these than gas stations on our roadsides. A recent report issued by Nissan claims that in four years traditional fuel stations will decrease from the 8,472 that there is today to around 7,870. While those figures are declining, the electric charging stations figures are soaring. Currently, there are 4,100 public charging stations in use across the U.K., and that figure is estimated to grow to around 7,900 by 2020, overtaking a number of traditional gas stations that will be around.
Electric cars are on the rise in the U.K. as more people begin to recognize the potential savings that can be had from owning one. Not only is there zero tax to pay, but free electric charging stations mean there are barely any running costs either. Just in the first quarter of 2016, 115 new electric cars were registered every day across the U.K., so this proves they are becoming a more popular choice of vehicle for many.
And not surprisingly, with the increase in electric car sales, comes further development in this area. U.K. energy provider, Ecotricity have just created an “electric highway” network of 296 free, rapid charging stations stretching across the country. They have been placed strategically in major hotspots and have provided drivers with more than 30 million free travel since its introduction in 2011. However, since it was a success, the company have now decided that it is necessary to charge for the electric in order to maintain and grow the network and customers now pay around $7 for a 20-minute charge. Which, depending on the efficiency of your electric vehicle, is still not that bad.
