Solar power in California is big business, and not surprisingly with the amount of sunshine the ‘Golden State’ sees each year. It is the leader out of all 50 states in generating solar power. One of California’s proudest achievements in terms of renewable energy is that it now boasts over 3.3 million homes that are powered by solar panels, and regarding money that this has saved residents has reached a staggering $192 million.
California was given a target, under the *Renewable Portfolio Standard that required 33 percent of all of the state’s electricity to be generated by solar power by the year 2020 and 50 percent by 2030, and it is well on its way to achieving this. Solar generation has grown tremendously in the past five years in the state and in March this year, 13 transmission projects planned in Pacific Gas and Electric were canceled as were deemed as unnecessary now with the massive intake of solar power use.
Hopefully, as the good news gets round to every one of the savings that can be made by switching to solar energy more states will strive to achieve the same targets, but there is still a long way to go before they catch up. Currently, the next state in the list of top ten solar states is Arizona, and although solar power is the primary source of electric for more than 320,000 homes, it is only a drop in the ocean compared to California. Others that are also ranking high in terms of solar power generation are North Carolina, New Jersey, and Nevada, but most states are increasing theses figures daily, and soon we will be one big, ‘green’ nation with much healthier wallets.
