Investigation for Brake Failure, 430,000 Harley Davidson Motorcycles Could Be Affected

You often hear in the news about various cars being affected with issues and need to be recalled like the Toyota Prius and their brake issues.  But, it is not that often you hear about the same sort of thing happening with motorcycles.  However, Harley-Davidson has just been put under the spotlight for a potential mass problem.

An investigation has recently been launched by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that is looking into Harley Davidson following 43 separate complaints from riders whose brakes had failed to work without any warning.  It is said that as many as 430,000 motorcycles could be affected which could mean big trouble ahead for the famous motorcycle giant. The motorcycles that are thought to be affected are between the model years 2008-2011 that have been fitted with ABS (anti-lock braking system).

Up until now, there have been three crashes and two injuries that are said to have stemmed from the motorcycle’s brake failure and many others say they only just managed to avoid a collision.  Although Harley-Davidson does have a two-year brake fluid service interval requirement, many riders are unaware of this or choose to ignore it, putting themselves in danger. As the old fluid becomes contaminated over time, it eventually corrodes the ABS actuator valves which may result in the brakes failing.

This is not the first recall that Harley-Davidson has suffered.  In 2015, over 50,000 motorcycles were recalled due to problems with the clutch and rear reflectors, and in 2014 nearly 200,000 motorcycle owners were offered a voluntary recall for potential issues with either the clutch or front brake line.  It is obviously quite a concern for Harley Davidson at the moment and mot much has been commented on them other than they are aware of the issues are cooperating fully with the NHTSA.  How this will affect their sales figures as confidence lowers, is yet to be seen.
