While scientists work daily to uncover the next big, new and exciting discovery, they do not always know what their intentions are once they have it! Some of the newest materials to come to light recently are topological insulators, multiferroics, ultracold atoms in optical lattices, and new materials for quantum computation. Read on for more information regarding these latest discoveries.
-Topological insulators: these are materials that act as an insulator inside, but the surface contains conducting states. With the use of topological materials, scientists are hopeful they will be able to develop low energy efficient devices.

– Multiferroics: Multiferroics materials are multi-functional magnets that combine ferroelectricity with magnetism. The researcher is hoping to be able to control the magnetic field to be used in low powered electronics.
-Ultracold atoms in optical lattices: Here, scientists have been working hard to make materials using ultracold atoms which are trapped by lasers. In doing this, optical lattices are created that allow easy controlling of the atoms interactions. This allows researchers to uncover more about magnetism and superconductivity.
-Quantum computation materials: Quantum computation involves using quantum computers and quantum elements. Materials are really important in the development of quantum computers as much research is still needed to be carried out in this area. But, researchers have recently discovered that they were able to increase the time that an electronic spin was trapped in a diamond crystal in its quantum state just by changing the composition slightly.
