Follow Walt Disney’s Top Tips For Getting ( and keeping ) Clients

Most people all over the world have heard of Walt Disney, who was a fantastic film producer, animator voice actor and entrepreneur who made his fortune from making people smile. His animations, voice, and creative talent were some of the things that added to his success, but so did the rules in which he lived by in business. Walt believed that the key to success is all about making others believe in your vision as much as you do. The rest, they say, is magic! Read on for some of Disney’s rules for finding and selling clients:

Don’t be afraid of failure and never wallow in self-pity – Walt has shown us all that dreams do come true if we put our minds to it, we just need to find the strength to go after what we want.
See what deals can be made – Other companies have things on offer too. Why not try and swap skills? Walt managed to rent his first office rent-free in exchange for doing a restaurants publication artwork.
Be unique – All companies need a unique selling point to succeed and make themselves known. Disney was able to sell his ideas to people by showing them something they had never seen before.
Keep your promises – If you can’t deliver something, then don’t promise it. Walt Disney was always a man of his word and never lied to any of his clients, no matter how horrible the situation may have been.
Keep it simple – Walt was not a pushy salesman. He used honesty and his real belief in his products to form trusty relationships.
Don’t have someone else see your idea – No one can pit across your ideas better than you. Whenever there was a big sale or bank deal to be made, Walt would always be in attendance as he knew he was the face of his company and it was his role as part of that.
Enjoy what you are selling – If you are not enthusiastic about your product, how can you expect your buyer to be? This did not come hard for Disney as he believed wholeheartedly in his creations.
Learn from others – There is nothing wrong with learning from the success of others, and this often what Disney would do as a youngster. He would hang around film lots and take in the details which he would put into great use one day.
Jump first, think later – Walt would often just go with his gut and worry about things later. The important part is getting the business in the first place.
Love the ideas, not just the pay – It is vital to love what you do if you want to make the most out of your business. Excitement and enthusiasm are what drives a company, not money.
Be your own boss – Walt learned early on that working for someone else is not all its cracked out to be and decided to be his own boss from that day forward. With you in control, your visions and your ideas are exactly as you want them.
Hire the best – If you want the best job done, then you need to hire the best people to do it. Disney did this and then pushed them to develop their skills even further and never settled for anything less than overachievement.
Know your market – Disney was always listening to his clients and giving them what they wanted. How can you truly please them if you didn’t know what they wanted?
Be different – Walt got turned down for several distributors when trying to sell Mickey Mouse originally, but when he made Mickey talk everyone wanted a piece as they had never been done before.
Build your reputation – Building a successful business takes time and money. Walt had to invest plenty of his money into some of his ventures before he saw a return, but when he did, it was worth it.
Stick to your guns – Your vision is your dream. Don’t change what it is you want just because of a couple of knock backs. Walt Disney was as stubborn as they came, but he knew that this would prove successful, and he was certainly not wrong.
