Extensive amounts of time and money have gone into research concerning stem cells and their many uses in medicine. Stem cells are an important feature in medicine as they have the potential ability to regenerate and repair damaged tissue which would help a great number of people. Recent studies have shown that when stem cells become damaged, they are replaced by new stem cells that have been created using the process of Embryogenesis. Embryogenesis is what creates the specialized tissues that when assembled generate a set of new stem cells.

These studies, supported by the National Institutes of Health and the European Molecular Biology Organization, may be just the breakthrough scientists were looking for in being able to use stem cells to regenerate cells and tissues in humans. Stem cells can be used to treat and cure so many illness and diseases that further research is an avenue scientist simply cannot afford to ignore. Currently being used in a number of treatments including bone marrow transplants and to treat patients with certain types of anaemia, stem cells are a giant helping hand in the name of medicine.
Recent studies on mice have already shown that both adult hair and intestinal cells could regenerate their stem cells, so could there be more components of the human body with this ability that we just don’t know about yet? As medical technology advances, so will treatments, and stem cell research could just be the start of it all, so watch this space!
