Taiwan Goes Nuclear-Free By 2025

In Taipei, on the 27th of May, the Minister of Economics, Lee Chih-Kung, pointed out that it was the government’s responsibility as well as its objective to implement the use of nuclear power by the year 2025 regardless of the alleged plan to extend the service provided by the country’s first nuclear power plant. As a result of this, both the first and the second nuclear plants will have to be shut off sooner rather than later due to the insufficient storage space that has been used by nuclear fuel.

In an effort to extend the service provided by the very first nuclear power plant so as to deal with the coming year’s electricity shortage, Taiwan Power Co., which is run by the state, intends on operating the power plant for a period of four months during summer, according to media reports.

However, this intended plan has been criticized by many claiming its plans are against the objective set by the government that involve getting rid of nuclear power by the year 2025. When questioned about this issue, Mr. Lee pointed out that getting rid of the nuclear power by the year 2025 did not mean that Taiwan was or has to stop using nuclear power with immediate effect. Mr. Lee went on to say that the government had clearly outlined an energy policy that would gradually move towards it set objective.
