The fight against obesity is most helped by gut microbes and the metabolism. What cannot be determined is whether it is diet or exercise that helps metabolism. The University of Missouri has carried out research and come to the conclusion that exercise is a major player when it comes to obesity control.
There have been claims that exercise is not that important, and the reason given is that you will become hungry so eat more. This was reported by Assistant Professor Vicki Vieira-Potter at MU, and it was for this reason that the research was carried out. The exercise was studied alone, and the team tried to determine how exercise affected fat tissue and led to weight loss.

Rats were used, and they were put into three groups. All were given a high-fat diet, and two groups remained inactive while the third one used running wheels. One of the resting groups was fed all the high-fat food they wanted, and the other had their amount limited. Those using the wheel were given all they wanted
After a few weeks, all went into special cages, and the metabolism was measured. Those that ate all they wanted and did not exercise were obese but those that used the wheel were not. Gut microbes were found in the active rats even though they ate the same food.
Activity continued even when the wheels were not there, and this meant they would not later gain weight. Vieira-Potter believes that this proves the need for exercise in order to be healthy.
