Tesla has all the attention when we talk about all-electric vehicles. But German Auto maker Audi – my favorite car brand – working on new battery technology for the e-cars. The high voltage battery will used on upcoming Volkswagen Group cars like the R8 E-Tron, Q6 Quattro E-Tron, and the Porsche Mission E four-door all-electric sedan. Audi’s main focus is creating a standard battery module that can be fit perfectly to many different cars. Modules are the size of a shoe box and made from aluminum. Also, can fill with cylindrical, prismatic or flat battery cells, depending on the car’s structure.

According to the reports from InsideEVs, Audi has increased the energy density of prismatic battery cells by 50%, now cells can work up to 550-watt hours per liter of volume. And Audi is planning the increase that by 50% over the next ten years. And the cost of battery cells dropped half over the past five years. Audi predict, the battery cells will work 100,000 miles without decreasing in performance.

There are only a few manufacturers who are trying to make more efficient batteries. The all-electric car market is small for now, but in time if the market grows, more manufacturers will invest money for researching better and more efficient batteries. I think, with the Formula-E electric cars will improve so much.
