It may sound a little odd, but experts reckon that by the year 2050 is here, robots will be so common and so integrated into our society, that human-robot marriage will be possible. These sex robots will basically replace the traditional partner and humans will soon be making love to machines.
At the recent, “Love and Sex with Robots” conference in London author of a book on human-robot love, David Levy, predicted that by 2050 human-robot marriages will be happening. But much sooner than this, we will see people living with robot partners, and Adrian Cheok, a computing professor at City University London and director of the Mixed Reality Lab in Singapore, agrees that this idea is not too far-fetched at all.
Cheok says, “Until the 1970’s, some states didn’t allow white and black people to marry each other. Society does progress and changes very rapidly. People assume that everyone can get married, have sex, fall in love. But actually many don’t. A lot of human marriages are very unhappy. Compared to a bad marriage, a robot will be better than a human.” There are various sex robots available to buy now, but none are anywhere near the real thing yet and still require a lot of work before they are.
Once the software has been developed that will enable a robot to understand the human conversation, the wheels will be in motion, and Cheok sees no reason why romances between machine and robot can’t happen. He says, “If a robot looks like it loves you, and you feel it loves you, then you’re essentially going to feel like it’s almost human love.” Over in Japan and South Korea residents are already akin to a similar idea in that they have cases of humans falling in love with computer characters.
But, on the opposite end of the argument, others are less convinced that sex robots have any moral standing and that marriage should remain a sacred contract between two human individuals. Whatever happens, only time will tell, and 2050 is still quite some time away. But, I think we’ll know long before then if human-robot marriages are likely to happen anytime in the future.
