Apple Inc. is regarded as one of the biggest names in tech. Currently, the corporate giant is contemplating on the possibility of diving into automated transportation. In a five-page letter from Steve Kenner, Apple’s director of product and integrity, the company expresses its interest in self-driving vehicle technology. This letter clarified things after five years of speculation.
If executed under the NHTSA’s guidance, automated vehicles have the potential to greatly enhance the human experience. Thus, Apple continuously urges regulators to promote test drive of this car that might potentially prevent millions of car crashes and fatalities. Apple is focusing on giving specialized attention to software as it will play a huge role in deciding correct protocol in potentially dangerous situations. This is where algorithmic decisions play a huge role.
Already, analysts are forecasting that millions of people will lose their jobs should self-driving cars replace commercial vehicles. Moreover, the Obama administration gave a nod towards this innovation in September by giving a 15-point safety assessment. What remains to be revealed is Apple’ actual interest in cars. Already taking an interest in pursuing self-driving cars are big cooperates such as Tesla Motors, Google Unit, VW, General Motors, Ford, and Demla.
Apple is looking for a technology group to collaborate with and has had talks with McLaren, the British automaker. Apple’s interest in getting into self-driving cars is the same as those indicated by other automakers concerning the proposed National Highway Traffic Safety Administration policy on self-driving cars. More work is still to be done before these cars hit the market.
