A New Wave of Surgical Robots Are Coming Our Way

How would you feel about being operated on by a robot? Well, that could soon be the future of our healthcare industry as again robots hit the headlines for performing a groundbreaking surgery. This time the robot in the limelight comes in the form of a sleek, more cost effective machine designed to carry out cataract surgery, called Axsis.

This robot is so precise that it can perform delicate cataract surgery like it was a piece of cake. The system was developed by Cambridge Consultants and is a teleoperated robot consisting of two arms that are each equipped with tiny pincers. It was designed specifically to be able to operate on the eye with more accuracy than that of a human surgeon.

Cataract surgery is a very common procedure that is carried out more on more than 20 million people every year. It involves cutting a small hole in the patients’ lens, scooping out the ‘cloudy’ part, and putting in a permanent lens as a replacement. By introducing a robot into the operating theater, money will be saved, accuracy will improve, and surgeons will be free to carry out more important duties that robots can’t yet cover.

The robot is controlled remotely by two 3D joysticks that move its pincers while the user works on a screen in front of them. Axisis’ creators feel that using the robot in cataract surgery is only just the beginning. There are many other areas the team is hoping it will be used including in gastrointestinal operations, and you can be assured we’ll be seeing much more of this little bit of the news over the next few months, so watch this space.
