It makes sense to have an integrated battery on any solar system, but up until now, it’s not an option that has really been explored much. The excess electricity that’s generated in the daytime could be used at night when most needed or to even out the demand on the grid. Many states continually support the use of solar power including both Hawaii and Nevada who have both created rules that will make energy arbitrage more profitable.
Any solar system will consist of two main components: the solar panels that capture the energy from the sun and turn it into electricity (DC), and the inverter that converts the DC current to AC current that can be used within the home or re-directed back to the grid. So, adding a third component (i.e. a battery), won’t be too difficult. In fact, it would solve many problems.
Currently, most people with solar systems that do make use of a battery have to buy both the solar panels and the battery separately. For example, SolarCity began by installing and connecting a Tesla Motors PowerWall battery as well as an inverter to the solar system. It’s only just recently that the setup has begun to change and the battery storage is starting to become integrated with the solar system.
It’s still early days, and there will be many more advancements to come in the world of energy storage. Tesla’s PowerWall 2 is the next step up towards the perfect solar storage inverter, and others such as SMA/LG Chem and Sonnen are also following suit. So, if you are looking for an integrated battery solution for your solar panel system, then you may just get what you wish for.
