Smartphones, smart lighting, smart sensors, smart cars; the list goes on. In a world where technology is advancing at the speed of light, it’s sometimes hard to keep up (for most of us anyway). However, if you are a resident of Singapore, it may be hard for you to imagine life before all this new technology. And now, with their “Smart Nation” program underway, we could well be seeing the world’s first ‘Smart City’ unfold right before our very eyes.
There are not many other countries across the globe that are as far forward in terms of becoming a smart city as Singapore is. Although the country is tiny (just 30 miles across), it has managed to progress so far regarding technology, and one of these reasons is because of the Smart Nation Initiative that was introduced two years ago.
The Smart Nation Initiative is basically a program that was set up in order to try and accelerate the country of Singapore into the digital era. And since then, there has been several individual programs and projects introduced into the country that’s focused on smart technologies. One of those is the fiber network that now runs right across the country, offering high-speed internet access to all.
In part of this leap forward as a smart nation, Singapore statistics show there is now three mobile devices for every two of its citizens, so it has certainly come a long way over the past few years. New projects are happening continuously in Singapore, and if it keeps accelerating technology at the rate it is now, then there is no reason why it won’t soon become the world’s first official “smart city.”
