Wind power is becoming an increasingly popular choice for those wanting to harvest free energy and recent figures released by the American Wind Energy Association suggest that 583,000 onshore turbines could power the entire United States. Generally, up until now, wind turbines have not been introduced as a pretty nice product, but just one that is fit for its purpose. However, the French company, NewWind are looking to change that and make wind turbines a funky way to harvest renewable energy.
These new turbines are called WindTree’s and consist of 54 spinning green ‘Aeroleafs’ that move in even the lightest of breezes. Each Aeroleaf is just over 3 feet tall and can generate 100 watts, making a total of 5,400 for the whole tree. Per year the average kilowatt hours produced by each tree is estimated to be around 1,000 to 2,000. So is not a figure to be laughed at, but is still only representing around 18% of a typical household’s energy consumption.
The WindTree stands at around 30 feet tall, and each one costs over $55,000 to buy, so they are not quite ready for the average consumer. But, for those of you that do have the spare cash, they could be a great help to generating some free energy. The WindTree can hook directly up to a house or other system and we could soon be seeing them as charging station for bikes or cars perhaps in public places such as schools, or malls. So, keep your eyes peeled for this new form of green energy.
