New Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Demonstration Sites Emerging in Japan

The first of four demonstration sites has been completed by Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. (MHPS) this week and testing is now in operation of a pressurized hybrid power generation system integrating a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack and a micro gas turbine (MGT). This system was installed at the Senju Techno Station of Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd., under a program supported by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).





It’s a system that has been designed for both business and industrial uses in mind and a ceremony was held to mark the beginning of something big. Some of the guests that attended the ceremony included representatives from NEDO and those from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Agency for Natural Resources and Energy.

Solid oxide fuel cells are ceramic and so are able to operate quite easily at temperatures of around 900 degrees Celsius. In this system power is directly generated by a chemical reaction that occurs between oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide that is extracted from reformed city gas. The residual fuel that is left over is then used to drive the micro gas turbine. This type of system is highly efficient and can lead to enhanced power generation very easily.

The efficiency of the demonstration system is around 55 percent and is a follow-up system to the Model 15 prototype that has been used in demonstration testing since 2015 at Kyushu University. The other three demonstration sites that will be added by the end of 2017 are a Toyota Motor Corporation factory, an NGK Spark Plug Co. Ltd facility and an another for Taisei Corporation.
