Assembly Bill 32 Gets Strong Backing From California Residents in Fight Against Global Warming

The California Global Warming Solutions Act (AB32) was established in 2006 and is a California State Law that aims to fight global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from all sources within the state.  Although some may regard California as being strict in some of their green policies, residents welcomed AB32, and 62 percent of voters are said to be supportive of the Act and its increased efforts in fighting climate change.

Of the 62 percent of voters that are in favor of the Act, the majority of support comes from Democrats with 80 percent of their people for the law.  This is compared to 56 percent of independent voters and 44 percent of Republicans.

The AB32 laws main goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in California to the level they were in 1990 and to achieve this by the year 2020.  This includes carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, nitrous oxide, and sulfur hexafluoride. Although the actual percentage these gas levels decreased by was less than 1 percent between the years of 2013-2014, California are still on target to achieve their 2020 goal.

Californians are certainly serious when it comes to fighting against global warming and just last year an executive order was issued by Governor Jerry Brown ordering the lowering of greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent of 1990 levels by 2030.  Again, it is an incentive that is both welcomed and supported by the majority of California residents and voters.

However, the fact that many voters don’t know about a major cog in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (the cap-and-trade system) plan is slightly worrying.  With the cap-and-trade system working by capping the carbon emissions of significant contributors and stipulating that a permit is purchased to pay for any additional greenhouses gasses that are released.  But, even though a rise in gas and electricity costs are certain for California residents, they are willing to accept this for the good of the environment.
