Wind power is a brilliant form of ‘green’ energy that has become more and more popular in the United States of America in last decade, with an average annual growth of around 25 percent between the years of 2005-2014. Now, officials of the Long Island Power Authority are set to approve plans for a 90-megawatt wind farm to be developed off the coast of New York, which if approved, would hope to complete as early as 2022.
The company behind this massive development is Deepwater Wind LLC, and if this project is completed, it will be the largest of its kind in the U.S and over three times the size of Block Island farm that is soon to be in Rhode Island. Situated off the east coast of Montauk, New York, 15 turbines will be installed over a stretch of around 30 miles.
With this to be the first wind farm in New York, it brings exciting times for the ‘Empire State’. And should they be given the go-ahead from the Long Island Power Authority, as expected, it will be a huge contribution in meeting Long Island’s ambitious target of achieving 50 percent renewal energy by 2030.
Although offshore wind power has been relatively slow to take off due to its higher costs than inland wind farms, it is not without its benefits, the main one being the power of the wind that is blown across the water is much stronger and much more frequent than inland. They also have less of a negative impact on the landscape as are in the middle of the sea!
Europe is big believers in wind farms with Germany being the largest contributor to European offshore energy production, and it looks like the U.S may be following in their footsteps. Over 90 percent of the global offshore energy production currently happens in Northern Europe, but with Deepwater making a stand, who knows how much more could soon be popping up around the waters?
