Getting help to people quickly when they need it following natural or man-made disasters can sometimes by a logistical nightmare, and in situations such as these, time is everything. The difference in arriving at someone just 2 minutes later than anticipated could literally mean the difference between life and death.
Pathologist, Dr. Timothy Amukele teamed up with Flirtey to design drones that could deliver blood and other supplies to places that were hard to reach or need them quickly. Some remote places of the earth that are still inhabited do not have proper roads, so getting medical supplies or blood to those types of places can be extremely tricky.
By creating drones to deliver blood and other medical supplies needed, we are also minimizing the risk of spreading any infectious diseases or major outbreaks. Drones could fly in, drop off the goods, and fly back out. Flying at around 30 mph and made from 3D printed carbon fiber components, these drones can currently complete a 10-mile trip. The drones operate autonomously via GPS but still need to be monitored by a human 100 percent of the time.
Although Flirtey is not yet selling their drones as a product, they are still looking to offer the use of them through a delivery service. They will continue to work with other organizations who can best make use of the drones, including disaster relief agencies. With the use of these drones, we could potentially save millions of lives, so it is hard to imagine people not coming on board with this one.
