With new robots being developed and produced on a larger scale than ever before, there will soon be a robot for everything! Just recently, Japan has opened the very quirky, but neat, robot hotel, where the staff is almost 100% machines. From taking your luggage, to greeting you at check-in, to getting you room service, you would find it difficult to find a human employee in this establishment.
As cool as it may sound to live in a futuristic type world, what will happen to the jobs of the workers the robots have taken over from? Robots are far more reliable and can work much longer hours than humans. They do not require feeding or time off to go the doctors. Just a few simple updates now and then and a robot can pretty much function at maximum efficiency all of the time.
Robots can be developed and programmed to perform a multitude of tasks, and with the right team in place, any company could create artificial intelligence that will benefit them. Studies have shown that with the advancement of artificial intelligence, over half of US workers jobs are at risk of being automated, either now or within the next 20 years, starting with customer service and manufacturing roles. This does not necessarily mean the unemployment rate will suddenly increase as for every role that a robot takes over, another is created to carry out their maintenance.
If we are looking to embrace the world of robots we need to ensure we find the right balance for society. Robots can make our lives a whole lot easier, but will we really ever be able to accept them as anything more than a machine?
