12 Million More Vehicles Have Been Recalled in U.S. for Faulty Airbags

According to Automotive News, Takata’s Airbags were expanded in over 12 million cars in the United States of America. Originally, the airbags were placed only on the driver’s side, but now, they will be placed on the passenger’s side as well.

At the beginning of the month, Takata indicated that it had approximately 40 million, in number, of defective airbags, which affected a total of 17 automakers. At first, Takata’s airbag inflators got recalled because they exploded with too much of an impact, causing them to scatter metal shrapnel. As such, there has been a total of 13 deaths and just over 1000 injuries that have been as a result of the defective airbag inflators. However, according to Takata’s recent report since the change made to the earlier default airbags, there has not been any incident of ruptures that has happened in any vehicle so far. Recalled cars have been given a higher priority depending on the age, as well as the risk of exposure they bear due to high humidity levels, which results in a number of vehicles not getting their inflators replaced for quite many years.

Just recently, the ministry of transport in Japan announced that automakers are going to be recalling a number over 7 million, in cars, with the new Takata airbag inflators. This being the case, Takata’s recall cost may go up depending on whether the original suppliers were involved or in any way responsible for the defective inflators.
