Back in 2013, a team of physicists discovered what is known as blackbody force. It’s an unusual force that could potentially be even stronger than gravity and is expelled by blackbodies themselves. Following some fresh research on this blackbody force, researchers at the Ceara State University and the Federal University of Ceara, Brazil have uncovered more information on this odd phenomenon.
Blackbodies emit a kind of thermal radiation that has the ability to both pull and push nearby objects such as atoms and molecules. For any hot, not so big objects, blackbody radiation can be stronger than their own gravitational pull. While blackbody radiation causes the push, blackbody force creates the pull. Together they produce an interplay of forces displayed in the world of quantum optics.
This new research takes a deeper look into how a blackbody’s shape and its effect on the curvature of spacetime affects the push and pull of the phenomenon. As part of the study, the researchers calculated the topology surrounding blackbodies which enabled them to see exactly how each object’s blackbody radiation forces are affected. The results from the study showed that while the curvature of space around spherical blackbodies amplifies the attractive force, there was no magnification detected in cylindrical blackbodies.
Lead researcher, Celio Muniz commented, “We think that the intensification of the blackbody force due to the ultradense sources can influence in a detectable way the phenomena associated with them, such as the emission of very energetic particles, and the formation of accretion discs around black holes.” Moving forward, the researchers are hopeful this new understanding of blackbody force and radiation will help define our own model of the formation of planets and stars and could even help us detect Hawking radiation some day.
