The introduction of energy storage systems has been on the cards for a while now, especially after the massive leak in 2015 at the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage facility in Southern California. This particular blowout released nearly 100,000 metric tons of methane into the air causing major problems. Operations at the facility ceased, and further brownouts and blackouts were experienced at peak times in the summer when there wasn’t enough natural gas to meet the demand. Even though the majority of the time the facilities services had no real effect on California’s supply, there was still a chance that in times of high demand people would be left short of electricity.
To get around this energy shortage issue, it seemed the best solution was to install a large amount of energy storage batteries into the grid that could regard as and when they were needed. The construction of this energy storage facility added great value to the grid of Southern California in no time at all. Within six months of the project being proposed, it was complete. These grids not only supply power at a time of need, but they also allow easier integration of other renewable energy sources.
Tesla is already on the case in terms of home energy storage devices while others such as Stem, Con Ed, and SunPower are looking to build a whole network of batteries that are capable of working altogether. The steep decline in battery costs over the past two years is another reason why they’ve become the best solution for many people. Not only is battery energy storage an effective solution, but it’s also highly efficient too, so why wouldn’t you want to take advantage of this system?
