If you can get your head around it, then there’s enough free information and resources available for anyone to have a go at making their quantum computer. And now, blueprints have been made available that may help those willing to try. Even today, there are hardly any quantum computers in existence, but when there are, they will undoubtedly change the world as we know it.

Operating on a whole different level to that of your standard computer, quantum machines rely on quantum bits (qubits) to process and encode information opposed to binary data (1’s and 0’s). This allows them to use information and encode it in a way that it could be a 0 or a one at the same time due to a phenomenon called superposition, making them exceptional when it comes to handling data.

Winfried Hensinger is the lead researcher from the University of Sussex (UK), whose working on a project with various other scientists from Google, Aarhus University (Denmark), RIKEN (Japan), and Siegen University (Germany). She says, “For many years, people said that it was completely impossible to construct an actual quantum computer. With our work, we have not only shown that it can be done, but now we are delivering nuts and bolts construction plan to build an actual large-scale machine.

Lead author, Bjoern Lekitsch, says, “It was most important to us to highlight the substantial technical challenges as well as to provide practical engineering solutions.” The blueprints the team has created allow qubits to be transmitted across individual quantum computing modules. These modules rely on connections generated by electric fields transporting ions from module to module. It’s these modules that create the high levels of processing power that we get. But, it’s currently only available at an industrial level, so you won’t be able to get one for the home just yet. However, we are getting there, and advancements are being made every day in the world of quantum computing. And when scientists do finally crack it, the world of committing as we know it will change forever.
